From First Kick to Varsity: William Hemmert’s Soccer Journey

From the first kick at just 3 years old at the YMCA in Toledo to earning a spot on varsity as a freshman, William's soccer journey has been built on passion, perseverance, and a lot of hard work.

Now a sophomore at Lake Shore, he's holding it down as a left back, bringing speed (thanks to track) and consistency to the field—plus pulling double duty as a kicker for the football team. Off the high school pitch, he wears #20 as a striker for Burn Travel, a number that means even more because it's his dad Joseph's old number.

After moving in first grade, William found his footing at Masonic Heights, and his dad coached his AYSO team at age 8. From rec soccer with friends to travel teams like SCS Rain and now Burn, the game has always been part of his story.

A natural athlete who's played just about everything, soccer has always stood out. But talent alone isn't the full picture. He lives by the mindset that "the work you do when no one is watching is what matters most." Even through injuries like concussions and a fractured foot, he continues to push forward.

Beyond sports, William stays busy—really busy. He's a Life Scout on the path to Eagle Scout, involved in MMSTC, and balances soccer, football, and golf. He also follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Jordan McBride (Class of 2020).

Driven by his dad, supported by his friends, and fueled by his own determination, William is just getting started.
