Varsity Girl's Swimming

Just Keep Swimming

Beyond the blue waters of the pool, high school swimmers find a profound connection with the sport, one that goes far beyond the competition. For Sophomore Elizabeth Schoof and Senior Carter Kohl, swimming begins with a fundamental love for the water.

Elizabeth began with swim lessons at Fraser High School and through training and a push from Dad Donald, she joined the team. This past Summer, she took an advanced class and started working as a Swim Aid, teaching kids ages 3-8 how-to swim.

She currently swims in the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 backstroke with the goal of swimming even further; Her favorite part is being on the 4-person relay race team. Coach Wolff continues to encourage her to compete in different events and helps develop her swim aptitude.

During the Girls' swim season, the team tied MAC Silver division rival Sterling Heights with a score of 62 - 62. The Shorians were led by Meredith Green and Brooke Lowry who each had 2 individual wins and were members on both of Lake Shore's winning relay teams. Meredith won the 200 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke events, while Brooke was victorious in the 50 and 500 freestyles. Allison Roy won the 100 Freestyle.

In the 200 yard Freestyle Relay, Roy, Green, Elizabeth Schoof and Lowry combined to win, while Lowry, Nora McDermont, Schoof and Green were victorious in the 400 Freestyle Relay. "It was a great meet for us considering that we gave them 28 points in the 4 events that we were not able to have swimmers or relays," according to Head Coach Greg Wolff. "Each of our swimmers earned a first place finish in a relay or individual event."

The night also featured first time swims in the 200 free by Schoof and the 500 Free by McDermont.

Dad David tossed Carter in his own above ground pool at a young age and that's when he found his love for the water. He continued to practice his passion when he visits the beach near Alger on family vacations.

His enjoys freestyle events and swimming with one of his best friends and teammates Vincent Brannon. He competes with only himself and finds distance to be a fun challenge. He even earned his lifeguarding certification this past school year and, as a result, received a $2 bonus at his job at the Saint Clair Shores Harbor.

Many of our Shorian athletes take swim and lifeguarding classes as conditioning and certification opportunities. During his Sophomore year, Collin Taylor got his lifeguarding certification which turned into a job at SCS City pool. Freshman Liz Adams enjoys working on skills in her Swim class at Lake Shore High School to benefit her as a teammate.
