Abby first hit the ice back in 4th grade—blame Shorian classmate Clayton Rogers! After starting with a Learn to Play program with the Bulldogs of Eastside Hockey, she spent that first "little season" figuring out how to skate…and discovering something no one else on her team wanted to try: goalie.
Spoiler alert: goalie involves a lot of skating. And a lot of very specific movements—down-ups, quick slides, and the kind of goofy grit only goalies seem to enjoy. But Abby loved it from the start. "Goalies are a different breed," she jokes.
She played one season with the Detroit Bulldogs before moving to the Metro Jets in Mount Clemens through middle school. In 7th grade, she overheard that a Lakers girls' hockey team was forming—and by her freshman year, she made the roster. She even reconnected with Avery Scola, a teammate she had played with on another team.
Outside of hockey, Abby also plays soccer and softball. On the ice, she holds the title of the team's only goalie, and she loves the thunk of the puck hitting her pads, the chill of the rink (except when it somehow feels hot), and the rhythm of the game.
Her personal goals? Earn at least one full shutout this season—and nail a shutout period every chance she gets. She knows skating and stick-handling are must-have skills, but she embraces the challenge.
If she had to describe herself in one word, it would be creative. When she's not in the crease, Abby loves drawing, animating on her Scratch account, and just making things for fun.
Her biggest supporters are her parents. Her brother, Cameron, follows right in her footsteps—soccer, hockey, baseball—you name it. And her mom always gives her space to cool down "on her cactus" after tough moments before helping her reflect on what went well and what she can improve. Mom Connie Kemner explained, "The cactus quote comes from telling her to "get off of her cactus" when she gets angry/frustrated at herself. While she's allowed to have feelings, but she's not allowed to let those prickly feelings affect how she treats others while going through them." Abby is proud of her new teammates, some of whom just started skating this fall. She's also grateful to have supportive coaches with the Lakers.
She'll never forget her first coach, Coach Johnny, from 5th grade: "He was amazing." And her favorite hockey memory so far? Winning the league championship with a shutout for the Metro Jets in March 2025. The icing on the cake for the championship was that the team already had tickets to see the PWHL Takeover that same evening so the girls wore their medals and jerseys to the game to continue their celebration.
Above all, Abby believes in one simple rule: Respect people.
