Inspired at 6, Leading at 16: Da’Ja Shines as a Cheerleader and Leader

Da'Ja has been cheering since she was 6 years old, inspired by watching her now 21-year-old brother Devin play football and the cheerleaders on the sidelines. With a gymnastics background starting at age 3, she always dreamed of being like Gabby Douglas—flipping, tumbling, and shining on the mat.

She officially joined cheer in 7th grade and has never looked back. From perfecting her round off backhand spring back tuck to building strength in the weight room ?? (squatting 130, benching 100!), Da'Ja has grown into a strong back spot and a true leader on her team.

Her biggest supporters? Her dad Darnell Summey is always the loudest supporter in the crowd at every competition. Her mom, Deondra—her best friend who never misses a game or competition—and her younger 12-year-old sister, Danae, who now cheers for Kennedy Middle School. ??

?? She also shared heartfelt words about her coach: "Coach Taormina listens, sees me as a leader, and I truly love her."

Cheer is more than a sport for Da'Ja—it's a family, a passion, and something that has strengthened both her body and mind. With dreams of one day cheering at the University of Michigan, she's focused on leading her team, building bonds, and reaching that ultimate goal: STATES! ???

We are so proud of you, Da'Ja!
