High school basketball provides a foundational environment where players can develop their basketball skills—shooting, dribbling, passing, and defense—while also working on physical fitness. It's an excellent opportunity for players to learn the fundamentals of the game.
Meet Senior
Zakiah Williams and Junior
Max Miner. Zakiah plays for the recreational fun while Max hopes to play professionally. Both guards are great ball handlers, dribble well through defenses while protecting the ball, and have excellent vision and awareness.
For Zakiah, her basketball development began at home by shooting hoops with her 3 siblings: Amire (22), Zariah (19), Xavier (17). She's fast and at 5'2", she has a vertical leap as a secret weapon. She described, "I'm tiny, but people are always surprised by how high I can jump." Is there a dunk in her future? Only time will tell.
In her free time, Zakiah enjoys doing hair, binging shows, and playing board games.
Athleticism is often a blend of natural talent and physical conditioning and 6'2" Max has the physical qualities and abilities that contribute to his success. The kid is always in the gym, shooting hoops with his siblings Micah (29) and Malik (23). He also spends 20 hours per week at the gym, putting in the time to better himself.
LeBron James is considered by many to be the greatest of all time in basketball and Max looks up to him and tries to emulate this hero. He plays year-round basketball including AAU, and his dad Melvin, a basketball player himself, is in the stands for every game. Max scored 24 points against Eastpointe while playing with Lake Shore's Summer league. It was one of his greatest games.
Whether it's the intensity of the crowd, the school spirit, or the nail-biting finishes, high school basketball is a thrill when watching both Zakiah and Max on the court.
